A brief overview of the city
Medina, also known as “The Radiant City,” is one of the holiest cities in the Islamic world, alongside Mecca, and is often referred to as “The City of the Prophet.” Located in Saudi Arabia, it is renowned for the Prophet’s Mosque, which houses the Prophet Muhammad’s tomb, attracting millions of visitors and worshippers from around the globe. Medina is also home to the Baqi Cemetery, where many of the Prophet’s companions are buried, as well as the Quba Mosque, the first mosque built in Islam, the Qiblatain Mosque, and Mount Uhud. Its rich historical and cultural heritage makes it a destination for visitors and pilgrims from all corners of the earth.
The history of Medina
The history of Medina dates back more than 1400 years ago when Prophet Muhammad migrated to it from Mecca, marking the beginning of the Islamic calendar. It served as a spiritual and administrative center for the emerging Islamic state and played a vital role in the expansion and spread of Islam. After the Prophet’s death, the city witnessed numerous historical events during various Islamic eras, from the Rashidun Caliphate to the Abbasid and Ottoman periods.
Medina has been and continues to be a major destination for pilgrims and visitors from all over the Islamic world. It is home to many important historical landmarks such as the Prophet’s Mosque, which houses the Prophet Muhammad’s tomb, Quba Mosque, and Mount Uhud.

The city's most prominent landmarks
The Prophet's Mosque
It is one of the most important landmarks in the city and the second holiest mosque in Islam. It houses the Rawdah Sharifah and the graves of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
Al-Baqi Cemetery
It is the first cemetery in Islam and contains the graves of many companions, members of the Prophet’s family, and followers.
Quba Mosque
The Quba Mosque is the first mosque built in Islam and is located in the southwest of Medina. Visitors come to pray there, as praying in it equals the reward of performing Umrah.
Uhud Mountain
It is considered one of the important historical sites where the Battle of Uhud took place. It is located north of Medina.
Al-Qobbatain Mosque
Also known as the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, this is the place where the qiblah was changed from Jerusalem to the Kaaba.
